Tonearms

From an engineering perspective, we believe that there is a hierarchy of importance in any record playing system. The transducers at either end (the cartridge and the speakers) have the most obvious impact. Each of those can imprint it's own signature on the overall perceived sound very easily, and are the ones most affected by external factors. They are the components most likely to be a matter of personal preference.

The tonearm's job at first glance appears simple. It's just there to hold the cartridge in the correct place as it transcribes a predefined arc across your record, right? Well, yes and no... Aside from complexities such as its effective mass interacting with the compliance of the pickup cartridge, there is the seldom mentioned issue of resonance, aside from resonance due to the aformentioned mass / compliance relationship. There is the resonance of materials used in the tonearm construction, the bearings, appendages such as fingerlifts, material / material boundarys etc which, when excited by the energy from the record groove can add / subtract or generally blur the information from the groove as it travels through the arm construction and back again to the cartridge. There is some novel experimental data out there, related to tonearms, and we have taken this data into account when producing our designs.

We produce tonearms for our own turntables, and also for yours. Be they OEM decks with old worn arms using unobtainable or poor 3rd party spares, or for your homebuild turntable.

We currently offer designs suitable for:

  • The Lenco L75 (a drop in replacement which requires no modification and allows use of the existing arm lift)

  • Rega turntables (currently just the 3 bolt mount)

  • Linn mount with Linn geometry

We also offer bespoke lengths for your home build, with nominal 12" on a Rega 3 point mount being a popular choice and easy to implement choice.

Our tonearms start at an excellent value for money £99 + shipping.

  • MM12 - Any Mount - £249 + shipping

  • LM9 - Any mount - £149 + shipping

  • Lenco Fit - £99 + shipping

  • HM12 - Any mount - £249 + shipping

MM12 - A conventional medium mass arm of 12" nominal effective length using a 15mm diameter carbon fibre arm tube - this one is fitted with a Rega 3 point base - fitted to my own turntable

LM9 - A low to medium mass design of *nominal* 9" effective length. The geometry of this arm can be optimised for Rega, Linn or Lenco - see following picture for Lenco fit without arm rest as a drop in replacement.

The lower arm in the picture is Lenco specific. It is supplied with a clip on 'pip' to interface properly with the Lenco standard arm lifter. This replaces the Lenco arm without modification

The HM12 - a nominal 12" effective length higher mass arm using a polymer flexure vertical bearing to isolate the conventional horizontal bearing from the higher mechanical  energy generated by most moving coil cartridges. Arm tube is damped by polymer inserts
